Become a public personality with character thus building your writing future through speaking! The first thing that writers, any type of writer must understand is that socializing and speaking come along with the career, therefore, it doesn’t help allowing shyness to become overwhelming.
But I’m not a talker, I’m a writer! Great. That means that you should be perfectly capable of forming sentences, also. Though writing may be your expertise, having the ability to communicate without pen and paper is also very necessary to get along in the literary world. Face the fact that most of the people who read your book and hear about your book are not writers! Fans are people who like to read after they hear of a great book or author who has their book promoted the proper way. Other than that, many will have to run across your book in the library or bookstore, look at the cover and read the back in order to even find out about you as an author! In other words, TALK!
Who ever heard of an author that would never socialize? Well, there are some, but guess what? Exactly. No one knows who they are. You couldn’t spot them anywhere at any given time because they won’t talk. Cleverly speaking, there are many things that you could engage any person in that could lead to them enjoying your conversation, thus, reading your book. It’s called the hook.
The hook is similar to fishing, but less physical when it comes to the fingers. When speaking to someone, you don’t always want to come off directly about your book. If that happens, when people run into you, they will scatter because they recognize that you always have a pitch, and that pitch is the only thing that you EVER talk about. That can become HELL-yunly annoying. What is really supposed to happen is true conversation. How do you master a conversation? Listen first, and then bounce questions off of what the other person says is one great way to master a great conversation. Why is it important to go through learning to master a conversation? The answer is to show you are interested in more than just yourself. (Just don’t be fake about it. A fake is marked a mile away).
This is the beginning of a great productive conversation. Somewhere in there, learn to guide the conversation to a topic in your book or article. Finally, all is done. Now, they are asking about you and your book after you have actually showed interest in more than just yourself. This is when you only take about thirty seconds or less to sell that book of yours. Please don’t spend fifteen minutes rambling about a 2 to 3 hundred page book when there is an obvious six liner on the back of the book that says it all.
Practice makes perfect, so go on…start talking! Actually, if you are not confident about your oral communication skills, learn from some of the best in the book Great Communication Secrets of Great Leaders. The goal is to have people want to not only enjoy you, but at times, even follow you!
